Description

Richard Herre was one of the central protagonists of modernism in Stuttgart in the 1920s. The multifaceted and extraordinary work of the architect, designer, graphic artist and translator is now being reviewed and presented for the first time.

Characteristic for him was his modern-objective will to design, which runs in great consistency through his entire oeuvre. He was a companion of Oskar Schlemmer, Willi Baumeister, Richard Döcker, Ida Kerkovius, the Hildebrandt couple and many others. From this close artistic network, Herre put a Stuttgart stamp on modernism.

Richard Herre was an early activist in the Deutscher Werkbund. Without him, the Werkbund exhibitions of the 1920s, up to and including the Weißenhofsiedlung, might never have become a reality. It was Herre who designed the now famous poster for the exhibition "Die Form" and furnished one of Max Taut's houses in the Werkbund exhibition "Die Wohnung".

His son Frank and his grandson Max Herre have now brought him out of oblivion and are continuing the history of this family, which continues to shape Stuttgart with its will to design to this day. The editor Dr.

Torben Giese has been director of StadtPalais - Museum für Stuttgart since 2017 and curator of the exhibition of the same name on Richard Herre.

Published: Torben Giese on behalf of the state capital Stuttgart.
