Description

Art theorist and influential Bauhaus teacher: When Wassily Kandinsky gave up his promising career as a lawyer at the age of 30 in favour of painting, nobody could have guessed that a few years later he would decisively determine and revolutionise the art of the 20th century.

What the art critic Will Grohmann wrote about Kandinsky in 1924 in the historical series Junge Kunst (Young Art) reflects the opinion at the time about Kandinsky's path to abstraction, which was perceived as irritating and bold. However, it was not only his radical artistic views that polarised the public, the charismatic painter also provoked both admiration and rejection through his personality. This bibliophile, richly illustrated volume illuminates Kandinsky's most important artistic and private stations, provides insights into his legacy and pays special attention to the years at the Bauhaus, where he taught together with artist colleagues such as Paul Klee and Lyonel Feininger.
