The biography of Hedwig Thun (1892-1969) is a fascinating journey through the art-historical epochs of the 20th century. For decades, her work was forgotten, literally gathering dust in a cellar, until over 80 surviving works, previously unknown documents, drawings, watercolors, poems and photos came to light. This book takes a comprehensive look at the life of a unique artist who not only studied at the Bauhaus under the influence of greats such as Kandinsky, but also exhibited in renowned galleries in Hamburg, Dresden and even the Museum of Modern Art in New York in the 1930s.
The book sheds light not only on her artistic development, but also on the challenges she had to overcome during the dark times of National Socialism. It shows how she launched her second career in the 1940s and asserted herself on the art scene. But despite these successes, her artistic journey ended with her death. The book tells the story of this impressive artist, whose work was lifted from oblivion by a fortunate coincidence and is now appreciated in all its practice and significance. Through this work, Hedwig Thun, an outstanding personality of gestural Art Informel, finally finds the place in art history that she deserves.
